A visit to the Information Centre Rauschermühle in Plaidt/Saffig – Enter the world of volcanoes

The Information Centre Rauschermühle is the central point in the Volcano Park. Here you can find information about all the projects. Take a journey through time with the help of two films showing fascinating pictures and computer animations; experience the dramatic evolutionary history of the Eifel and the 7000 year old story of stone extraction in the region. Illuminated pictures, large format photographs, ancient and medieval original exhibits all help to create a unique presentation. You can tour the Information Centre either with the audio guide or by booking a guided tour to learn all about volcanism and stone extraction.

Visit the nearby Rauscherpark

The Rauscherpark lies directly behind the Information Centre. For over 200,000 years the river Nette has cut its way through the lava stream of the Wannen volcano group. Over the course of thousands of years the river has freed up basalt blocks over which the Nette now gently cascades. Visible marks in the stone bear witness to Roman excavation activity.

Visit the historical Lay in Etrringen

Visit the Ettringer Lay, or – the “Anatomy” of a basalt rock face.

With a multitude of technical remnants from the early 20th century the Ettringer Lay is a unique monument to the history of stone excavation.

sign-posted footpaths and experience the fiery history of the Ettringer Lay.

If you look over the edge into the quarry with its massive basalt rock face you can imagine how deep the valley must have been before the eruption and also how much lava flowed down from the Ettringer Bellerberg. Along the circular route life size steel figures, such as our “soup carrier” depict scenes out of the daily routine of the quarry workers. Some of the figures are tucked a little bit out of sight. Who can find all ten figures?

Visit the Kottenheimer Winfelds

Follow the volcanic walkway signs to Kottenheimer Winfeld. The Winfeld is an old stone quarry, in the past iron cranes, stone workers huts and massive heaps of stone rubble stood here. Nature has already reclaimed this area long ago. Today it is a wild and beautiful park landscape, concealing a unique historical industrial monument.
