Vulkanpark-Project is Europe-Nostra-Award Winner – The only award for archaeological sites in Germany

The Vulkanpark-Project Römerbergwerk Meurin belongs to the award winners of the European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage/Europe Nostra Awards 2003 since the beginning of June. At the beginning of June the tuff mine was awarded the European “Oscar for the preservation of the heritage site.

The awards ceremony took place in Munich in line with a festive ceremony under the patronage of the Europe Nostra President, Prince Consort Henrik of Denmark. Acting as a representative Dr. Holger Schaaff, academic of the Vulkanpark Research Centre for volcanology, archaeology and technical history accepted the 2. prize in the category for archaeological sites.

The European Commission introduced the prize two years ago in line with the cultural programme. Europe Nostra which is the pan-European federation for cultural heritage, was in charge of the realisation of the process. Approximately 200 organisations from 30 countries have joined forces with the in Den Haag-based association „Europe Nostra“ in order to protect the European cultural heritage.

The prize is awarded for outstanding accomplishments which contribute to the protection and preservation of cultural heritage in Europe. In the case of the Römerbergwerk Meurin the academic research is just as appreciated as the extensive measures for preservation and protection of the monument as well as its public presentation.
