Romans in the Pellenz

The most significant Roman legacy in the Pellenz is the 2000 year old Roman mine at Meurin near Kretz. In the dark and narrow tunnels of the largest Roman tuff mine north of the Alps the Romans extracted the tuff stone for a variety of building projects. This unique cultural monument, which explains to the visitor the history and techniques of the Roman tuff extraction, is today protected by a modern hall like construction. Illuminated pictures and interactive computer animation help to explain this ancient workplace beneath the earth’s surface.

In Nickenich, by the sports ground, a burial chamber belonging to a wealthy Roman family was discovered in 1931/32. The elaborate rotunda is constructed entirely out of tuff stone. In Ochtendung (Am Römerhügel 4) a Roman cemetery was discovered in 1978. A burial chamber, similar to the one in Nickenich, also bore witness to the wealth of those buried within it.

In Kruft Roman buildings were discovered a few years ago. Parts of these served the purpose of workshops use to process the tuff stone. Other buildings in this complex are – a Roman cellar, an area for breaking the tuff stone down, and a historical Roman well (Kaspar-Schmitz-Straße 4).

The Pellenz archaeological museum has a small exhibition covering the pre Pellenz and early Pellenz history from the Neolithic period up to the age of the Romans. The majority of the exhibits on display here were found by private persons while excavating pumice stone.
