Romans in Andernach

The Hohe Buche
The volcano Hohe Buche Northwest of Andernach is a cinder cone. It brought around 210,000 years ago lava up to the surface.

The uniqueness of the Volcano Park project Hohe Buche is based upon the clearly to be seen evidence of basalt extraction from ancient times through to the 19th century. Here, at one location, you can observe 2500 years of quarrying history!

Approximately 2000 years ago the Romans extracted out of the once glowing hot lava of the Hohe Buche stone for a large project, the building of a bridge at Trier to cross the Mosel. The pillars of this bridge are still standing.

A forest hike of a few hours leads nature lovers to this unique monument. The bridge provides testimonial to the usage of the local stone and the development of excavation techniques.
